About the Freshwater Umbrella website

The Freshwater Umbrella web site is listed in Intute, a free, online service providing Web resources for education and research.

Compliance with web standards

This website has been designed to conform to the standards set by the World Wide Web Consortium for XHTML and CSS for the creation and display of documents published on the WWW. By making the pages conform to the standards they should be viewable in a wide range of browser and other user agents, including future versions of these agents which are standards compliant.

The Freshwater Umbrella web site has been designed to be rated AAA approved, complying with all priority 1, 2, and 3 guidelines of the W3 Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Where AAA approval is not possible every effort has been made to eliminate as many non-compliant elements as possible. Most other pages have AA approval.

Design

This site was built and is run entirely using free, open source software. The Freshwater Umbrella web site:

• was created using Bluefish;
• was created and hosted on computers running Linux - Fedora;
• is served by the Apache web server and uses the PHP scripting language;
• uses the MySQL database server;

Browser Compatability

The Freshwater Umbrella web site has been tested with a wide variety of web browsers on a range of operating systems. The web site is best viewed in a standards compliant browser such as Mozilla Firefox. However, every effort has been made to insure that the site is displayed as consitently as possible in as many browsers as possible. There are only minor differences in display when viewing the site in Internet Explorer 6 on Microsoft Windows, for example.
